Hello,

I just recently purchased an AB Chase 5'7" grand and believe it was made in
1922. It is still in good condition from what I can tell. I'm certainly new
to this, but have been researching and read The Piano Book. I also watched
a technician spend a day going through the piano - looked like cleaning,
basic regulation, voiced the hammers, and tuning. So far, so good. But...

One of the keys just started missing intermittently. So, being adventurous,
I removed the action to take a look. It is the C an octave above middle C.
Basically from what I can tell, the jack is getting stuck behind the knuckle
sometimes which "jams" the key and doesn't bring the hammer up to the
string. The key looks out of alignment too - the hammer is catching the
backcheck way off center and the jack is hitting the letoff button off
center as well. There is some obvious offcenter wear on both the backcheck
and the knuckle.

I'm in a bind to get the key working and was wondering if anybody can help
me with a starting point to help fix this? Thanks for any help you can
give. I learned much today just reading through your threads in this group.

Sounds like the whippen flange needs to be re-pinned. Did you pull
the whippen out to check?

Thanks for responding. No, I didn't and I'm not sure how to. Are you
talking about the pin from the wippen to the jack or to the repetition
lever?

The flange that attaches the whippen to the rack, in the back. Or
like you mentioned, it could be the jack or the rep. lever flange.
Reblitz book will help you. "Piano Servicing Tuning & Rebuilding"
