Speakers for electronic piano / MIDI

My old Korg Concert 4000 from 1990 is going to be used at home for my
personal enjoyment. I want to buy mid-priced speakers that will give decent
MIDI output. The tonal quality is important ... the volume is only needed
on LOW for my living room.

As long as I buy AMPLIFIED speakers, do I really need to spend $300 for
MidiMan Maudio Studiophile Spkrs BX5? Or, would an AMPLIFIED computer
speaker or stereo speaker be sufficient for playing in the living room of my
condo?

Actually the room has as much effect as the speakers so without a properly
designed room, the question is sort of moot. In my computer studio I simply
use a Yamaha system designed for the computer that has a powered subwoofer.
I allow my sound cards to shape the sound and keep the speaker output flat.
When doing serious mixing, I always use headphones. Then I test the CD out
in various modes, big room, small room, home stereo, club system, auto,
boombox, etc.

No.

Yes.

A line-level audio signal is a line-level audio signal.

The audio coming out of your Korg will be the same as the one coming out
of your CD play, the same as audio coming out of your computer, DVD, Tape
player, Tuner etc. etc. (except microphone and turntables, they're not
'line-level')

So whatever you use for your DVD/CD/Tuner/Discman/Tape etc. etc. will be
good for your Korg. (depending on what you end up using, plug adapters may
be necessary)

With the right cords, your current home stereo (if you have one) will
work perfectly.

Note that speakers and amplifiers do not understand MIDI. MIDI is
used to speak to synthesizers and computers, and only contains note
data, no audio data. You want to hook the line out of your keyboard
(not the MIDI) into the line in of your stereo. Just find a cord that
has plugs on one end that look like the line out of your keyboard, and
plugs on the other end that looks like the line in of your stereo, and
you're done.
